You see a great outfit in a photo, a video or a street-style post, and there’s no caption telling you where it’s from. Asking in the comments rarely gets an answer. Searching with the picture itself usually works much better.
Quick answer: screenshot the outfit, crop it to one item at a time, upload it to our free Reverse Image Search and tap Google Lens. Then try Bing for more shops and cheaper look-alikes.
Step by step
- Screenshot the photo or pause the video on a clear frame.
- Crop to a single piece: the jacket, the shoes or the bag. Searching the whole outfit at once confuses the results.
- Upload the cropped image to our Reverse Image Search.
- Tap Google Lens and look at the shopping results. You’ll often see the exact item, the brand and several shops.
- Tap Bing for a second set of results. It often finds different stores and prices.
- Repeat for each piece you want.
Search the clothes, not the person
For the best results, crop so the clothing fills most of the picture and faces and backgrounds are left out. Visual search matches colours, patterns, shapes and logos, so the more of the item it can see, the better the match.
Tips for better matches
- Look for details such as logos, buttons, stitching, prints and hardware on bags. These help identify the exact brand.
- Use the clearest frame. Motion blur and filters make matching harder.
- Add words after searching. In Google Lens you can add text such as “linen”, “black” or “women’s” to narrow the results.
- Try more than one angle if the item appears in several photos or frames.
- Search the shoes separately. They’re often the easiest item to match exactly.
Found it, but it’s too expensive?
Visual search shows similar items as well as exact matches, which makes it a great way to find more affordable look-alikes. Scroll past the exact match and you’ll often find similar styles at much lower prices. Adding words like “similar” or a price range can help too.
Watch out for fakes
- Very cheap listings for designer items are often counterfeits using the brand’s own photos.
- Buy designer pieces from the brand’s own store or well-reviewed retailers.
- Check that a small seller’s photos are really theirs. Our guide on checking whether a seller’s photos are real shows how.
Other places to search
- Some shopping apps, including Amazon and Pinterest, have their own camera search for finding similar items in their stores.
- On many Android phones, Circle to Search lets you search an outfit straight from a video or app without saving a screenshot.
- For furniture, gadgets and home decor, see how to find any product from a picture.
Frequently asked questions
Can I find an outfit from a video?
Yes. Pause on a clear frame where the item is visible, take a screenshot, crop it and search it like any photo.
Why do I get similar items instead of the exact one?
The exact item may be old, sold out or from a small brand that isn’t well indexed. Try another crop, another engine, or add the brand name if you can see it.
Is it free?
Yes. Searching is free. You only pay if you decide to buy something.
